They were displaying the bejewelled variety of bug. Sticking little glittery stones on a critter may not be good for their health? Or perhaps the assumption is that the critter will be kept in one's jewellery box (of course), rather than a suitable critter habitat, and it will, therefore, have a seriously reduced life span?

still beats wearing spandex, parachute pants, tight shorts with words on the butt, non ironic white t-shirts with air brushed words, sweatpants with zebra stripes, or anything with puffy letters...
ylmurph: I disagree. Theoretically I could wear all of those hideous items you mentioned, but I could not wear a giant roach on leash. The level of disgust is too high.
not only is that sick and disgusting, but I think its an example of how twisted humans are that we could consider ok to do this to another living creature. (No, I'm not a roach activist!)
#1 madigascar Hissing roaches live over 1 year do not eat thair own shells or emitt oders actually they make pretty interesting pets, being TOTAlly HARMLESS... these remarks seem to me to be the lack of insect education... Not that I agree with the whole Leash/Jewlery aspect.. But hey why not?? If leash was removable & the creature is placed in a safe little keeper with food and water when not in use it could easily live 1 Year or more... People only fear what is different..
yeah, hissers can actually live up to five years, if cared for properly. and they are not dirty or unsanitary or anything as they are bred to be pets and are not pests to humans. the one thing i don't understand is what happens to the crystals when the roach sheds (which they do fairly frequently). Is that the end of them?
I have a roach brooch from jared gold and i appreciate him for saving these exotic pets instead of making them as feeds for larger animals. They shed exoskeleton when they molt. They eat their exoskeleton as their source of protein which is good for their body. that is a physiologic need for them. Lifespan is 2-5 years. they dont bite, they dont fly and very harmless. They dont carry disease bec. they were bred in captivity and that means they dont lurk under your kitchen sinks and floors. Largest and rarest of all roach species. the leash from jared gold can be taken out so the insect would feel comfy lurking in its cage. i respect ur opinions but dont be close minded when it comes to studying and understanding this kind of insect so it wouldnt look like that these creatures as pests.
And they use adult males for brooch only so it wouldnt molt and the swarovski crystals would still stay. they dont use females because they molt quick and they give live births to their offsprings.
See im afraid of cockroaches but this thing helped me to appreciate this kind (not the dirty kind) and i learn a lot of things about this creatures and basically about their importance in the ecosystem.

I just can't look at these things as either pets or jewelry. I think of them as things I would stomp if given half a chance.
